Ootsubo: How’s your practice going?

Kuroko: It’s been going well. By the way, do you have a minute? Is Midorima-kun doing alright at Shuutoku? He’s not getting left out or anything, is he? I’ve been a little worried about him.

Ootsubo: Well, your fears were probably justified, at least until recently. For instance, let’s see… This happened right after Midorima joined the team…

[flashback; in Shuutoku’s gym]

Coach Nakatani: Gather around!

Ootsubo: What is it, coach?

Miyaji: We haven’t changed out of our uniforms yet.

Nakatani: That’s fine. Just listen. I’ve modified our training menu a little bit. Ootsubo, give everyone one of these printouts.

Ootsubo: Right away.

Miyaji: Hmm, let me see… Footwork and passing practice…

Kimura: We’re still doing fundamentals for the first half of practice, so that hasn’t changed much.

Takao: So most of the major changes are in the second half?

Ootsubo: The time allotted for combination practice has been increased.

Takao: So we’re cutting down on individual practice instead…

Nakatani: It’s just what it looks like. As we head toward the Inter-High preliminaries, we need to devote more effort to our combinations.

Midorima: Coach, that won’t do.

Nakatani: What? Who said that?! It was you, Midorima?! What, are you unsatisfied with the new practice schedule?

Midorima: Bluntly put, yes. It’s problematic for me if you cut down on the amount of time for individual practice. Besides, there’s no need for me to practice combinations to begin with. Please let me use that time to practice my shooting.

Nakatani: …what did you say…?

Miyaji: Coach~? Is it okay if I deck this guy~?

Kimura: Miyaji, lemme help.

Takao: Pffft… Crap, I’m gonna burst out laughing… Just how self-absorbed are you? Read the situation a little bit, will ya? Hehehe…

Kimura: Oi!

Takao: Nope, I wasn’t laughing, senpai!

Nakatani: Midorima, let me hear your reasoning.

Midorima: I have to fine-tune the accuracy of my shots every day. That is my reason.

Nakatani: …hmmm…mmm…

Ootsubo: Coach! You can’t possibly be thinking of approving this!

Nakatani: Be quiet! Hmm…alright. You’ll have your own training menu.

Midorima: You have my thanks.

Miyaji: Seriously, coach?!

Nakatani: I don’t want to hear any more about it! Go get changed and start practice!

Ootsubo: …if the coach says so, then there’s nothing else for it. Have it your way. However! If we don’t see results, then you’ll be in for it.

Midorima: It won’t be a problem. If I fine-tune my shooting every day, then my shots will never miss.

Ootsubo: I’ll hold you to that.

[end flashback; in the gym at the training camp]

Ootsubo: …well, he was true to his word about that, so I guess I can’t complain.

Kuroko: It doesn’t seem like he’s changed much…

Ootsubo: No, I think he has changed, even if it’s just a little bit. Well, you’ll get to see for yourself soon enough.

Kuroko: Really? I’m looking forward to it.

Hyuuga: Man, he doesn’t miss a shot, even during practice…

Takao: Hm? What’s up? …oh, I see.

Midorima: …

[Midorima makes another shot]

Hyuuga: Like he’d miss. The ball’s not even touching the rim.

Takao: No matter where or when Shin-chan takes a shot, the result is always the same.

Hyuuga: “No matter where”…? Sheesh. Still, he’s got some nerve to decide that he’d be able to make three-pointers at any range.

Takao: Speaking of which, Shin-chan and I had a conversation like this a while back.

[flashback; in Shuutoku’s gym]

Takao: Shin-chan, you really showed up the senpai during practice today~!

Midorima: Not really. And I didn’t go that far. The fact that I won by a large margin simply revealed the difference in our ability.

Takao: So basically, you showed them up.

Midorima: There’s no such thing as senpai and kouhai on the court. There’s only ability. Accordingly, I won because I was the strongest. That’s all there is to it.

Takao: Gyahahahaha!

Midorima: What’s so funny?

Takao: Nah, it’s more than funny—it’s a riot. The fact that you make declarations like that is the reason you invite the wrath of our senpai.

Midorima: But it’s the truth.

Takao: Right, right! And that’s why even the senpai who hate you can’t complain. That’s why it’s a riot. You were making three-pointers one after another again, right? Did you see the looks on Miyaji-san and Kimura-san’s faces?

Midorima: I’ve never cared about the expressions on the faces of our senpai.

Takao: When you took a shot, they’d be praying, “Let it miss! Let it miss!”

Midorima: So long as no one disrupts my shooting stance, there’s no way I would miss a shot.

Takao: You’re full of confidence, as always. Well, yeah, you’ve never missed one.

Midorima: Of course not.

Takao: Yeah, but you’ve gotta have some kind of limit, right? Can you make a shot without fail from anywhere on the court?

Midorima: I’ve never tested it enough to say for certain, but if I were to get serious…hmm…

Takao: Hm? What’s up? You got all quiet. If you get serious, then what?

Midorima: …if I get serious, then I can make a shot even from the endline.

Takao: From the endline…? You’ve gotta be kiddin’ me. That would mean the entire court’s within your shooting range.

Midorima: Then let me prove it to you.

Takao: Hey, now, just ‘cause your joke wasn’t funny doesn’t mean you have to get all stubborn.

Midorima: I’m not joking. Like I said, I can’t say with certainty yet, but… I just decided. I’ll include shots from the endline in my play from now on. So I’ll have to devote even more time to practicing and fine-tuning my shots.

Takao: You’re serious?! I’d be amazing if you could make a shot like that! But in your case, you might really be able to do it. I’ll be waiting for that shot.

[end flashback; in the gym at the training camp]

Takao: …well, so I said, but I never expected him to actually do it.

Hyuuga: Damn straight. And as one of his opponents, that’s hardly reassuring…

Takao: Why don’t you try to make a shot like that?

Hyuuga: Me?! Well, I’d like to increase my shooting range, but… Nope, I’ll pass. (Like I could try a shot like that! No matter how many Sengoku figures I have, it would never be enough!)

Kasamatsu: Before we get started, I want to go over a few things about the goals for today’s practice. Is everyone here?

Hayakawa: Kise’s not here yet!

Kasamatsu: Practice is about to start, but he’s sure taking his sweet time.

Moriyama: Oh, yeah. I saw him outside a little while ago. He was surrounded by girls.

Kasamatsu: …girls?

Kobori: Probably asking for his autograph again?

Kasamatsu: Geez, that Kise… What’s with that happy-go-lucky attitude? All it takes is a few screaming girls and he thinks he’s all that.

Moriyama: I know, right? Kise’s the only one they go gaga over. I wonder if he’d introduce us.

Kasamatsu: That’s not the issue! I want him to devote himself more seriously to basketball!

Moriyama: Haa. How about this: If he comes late, we’ll make his fans participate in practice, too.

Kasamatsu: That’s all you think about, isn’t it?

Hayakawa: I’m se(r)ious about basketball!

Kasamatsu: Like I care! We’re not talking about you!

Kobori: Even so, it’s not like he doesn’t practice at all, and he’s an integral part of the team during games. Since he also works as a model, it’s only natural for him to get surrounded by fans.

Kasamatsu: I know that… I know that, but…

Kobori: And compared to when he first joined the team, he’s started taking it a lot more seriously, don’t you agree?

Kasamatsu: Yeah, I guess. I know he’s serious about basketball… When we lost that game, he looked incredibly frustrated… Still, he needs to be on time! If he’s even one second late, I’ll double his amount of weight training!

[Kise rushes in]

Kise: I’m sorry! I made it in time, right?!

Kasamatsu: Yeah…just barely.

Kise: Thank goodness! I had no idea what I’d do if you had already started!

Moriyama: Despite what he says, Kasamatsu goes really easy on Kise.

Kise: Eh? What are you talking about?

Kasamatsu: Nothing at all! Sheesh… Alright, there are a few things I want to discuss before practice.

[in the gym]

Izuki: Kagami…here I go.

Kagami: Ah, uh, okay…

Izuki: If your binder’s falling apart, bind ‘er back together!! (1)

Kagami: …okay.

Izuki: The bathroom was a total wash!! (2)

Kagami: …yeah.

Izuki: A stone’s favorite music is rock!! (3)

Kagami: …sure.

– –

Furihata: Yikes… Poor Kagami. That looks rough…

Fukuda: Izuki-senpai has him square in his sights, in a sense…

Koganei: Hey, Kuroko, he’s your partner. Why don’t you go bail him out?

Kuroko: No… That’s too much for me to handle. But I’m sure it will be alright. Kagami-kun can overcome any obstacle.

Koganei: But how on earth is he supposed to get out of this one…?

Kuroko: …Kagami-kun could start making jokes, too.

Koganei: I don’t think I’d be able to stand it if we had two punsters on the same team.

– –

Izuki: Still no effect, huh? In that case… The futon flew off (futtonda)! How much (ikura) is this ikura?! (4)

– –

Furihata: Those don’t even pass as puns!!

Fukuda: They’re so bad that the fact that Kagami grew up in America doesn’t even matter anymore.

Kawahara: But Kagami’d be off the hook if he would just laugh at one of them, even if he has to fake it…

Koganei: Yeah, but there’s something strangely impressive about the fact that he and Izuki have made it this far…

Tsuchida: …is that really something worth admiring?

Mitobe: …

Hyuuga: I can’t help but sympathize with Kagami… Guess I’ll go bail him out.

– –

Hyuuga: Hey, Izuki, there’s something I have to tell you about your puns. The problem has nothing to do with the fact that Kagami used to live in America…

Izuki: No, you don’t have to say it, Hyuuga. I’ve already realized. As far as my puns are concerned…I know that I’m still inexperienced.

Hyuuga: Oh. You do? (Though I’ve got the feeling that even experience won’t help…but whatever.)

Izuki: At this rate, I can’t even hope to compare to my mom.

Hyuuga: Hm? “Mom”? Your mother?

Izuki: Yeah. I often find myself overcome with admiration for one of my mom’s puns. Like…“I’ll go see you play when you make it to the championship league. I’ll champion your cause!” (5) That’s great stuff, isn’t it?

Hyuuga: Like mother, like son?!

Izuki: At any rate, I still have a long way to go. Kagami!

Kagami: Uh…yeah?

Izuki: Don’t worry. I’ll be ready by the Winter Cup…with a satisfactory pun!

Kagami: Quit with the puns already! Please!

Izuki: Mmh…! “Quit with the puns”?!

Kagami: Ah! No, I mean, I’ve already heard plenty…

Izuki: Good one, Kagami. In other words…you want me to stop playing with wordplay! (6)

Kagami: He’s still going?! Somebody save me!

– –

Translation Notes:

(1) 「Binderを買えバインダー!!」

(2) 「Toiletに行っトイレっと!!」

(3) 「Stoneがスットーンだーっ!!」

(4) At this point, Izuki’s puns start to fall apart (and not make much sense). 「布団がfly off(ふっとんだ)! このイクラhow much(いくら)?!」

(5) 「決勝リーグに出れられたら見にいくね。お化粧して」It’s the same pun on “kesshou” (“championship”) and “keshou” (“makeup”) that she uses in chapter 42.

(6) 「シャレはやめなシャレ!」

      Thanks for your comment.
I would love to make a patch, but I think the process of patching the game would be fairly time consuming and require knowledge of video game coding. Also, I’ve been playing a hard copy of the game, so I don’t even have an ISO.
That said, if there are other people willing to form a group to work on a patch, I’d be more than willing to provide translations. 🙂

  1. notshunnaorealted says:

“Don’t look at me. Your guy was the one who barged in and messed things up.” … and did you notice that Midorima didn’t even ONCE said something about that “YOUR guy” part? And that they were quarreling like old married couple? xD
Sorry if my spaming about their 99% of canon relationship is annoying you xD

    • grimmfeather says:

The original Japanese for the “your guy” line was 「オマエんとこの」and 「オメーのところのヤツ」, which literally mean “the guy from ‘your’ place (Shuutoku)”, i.e., “your teammate”. That said, Kagami seems to be referring specifically to the association between Midorima and Takao, as if Midorima should somehow take responsibility for what happened, which is why I chose to translate it the way I did. XD

They certainly have the old married couple act down pat. There are a couple of Shuutoku events coming up in the game that I think you’ll enjoy. 😉

Thanks for your comment, as always! Reading people’s comments is part of the fun for me.

Ufff, then I’m happy that I didn’t bother you with my chatting xD
I wish I knew Japaneese so I could at least read all those Midorima and Takao moments (care to translate them? *shining eyes like Cat from Shrek* LOL) but I don’t know it and I’m too old to start learning xD
Well, if he said it that way then it still seems to be “YOUR guy” without any pun to the team LOL
And it’s really good that there is someone like you who translates just for fun and shares it with us. Really, thank you >.<

        • grimmfeather says:

Nope, it’s not a bother at all. 🙂

Haha, I don’t think it’s ever too late to start learning another language, but I’ll definitely keep translating! It’s great Japanese practice for me, and I want everyone to be able to enjoy the game.

Thanks for such a kind comment. (^▽^)

OMG thank you so much for posting up the translations, I LOVE how even in the game, they have such awesome interactions with each other!! ❤ I am so grateful that you decided to translate this and hope that you will continue to do so!

  3. Guest says:

I for one, have started to just for fun imagine girls from other animes who’d be suitable to the characters in knb…..when i thought of Kuroko , honoka from Pretty cure came up in my mind….the same happened when I thought of akashi…..creepy xD

  4. Guest says:

just for the sake of this being more understandable, honokas description :
“Honoka is a gentle, understanding girl who always put others before herself. She is very smart, even being called the “The Queen of Knowledge (知識の女王 Chishiki no joō?)”, “The Queen of Intelligence (知性の女王 Chisei no joō?)” or “The Queen of Wisdom (叡智の女王 Eichi no joō?)” by her classmates, and often uses this to help people. However, Honoka may also be quite strict, and when she thinks someone has not done all of their work, she’ll force them to do it. She is, however, doing this because she cares. Although she is the crush of almost every boy in school, she is not interested in most of them, but she has shown to care very much for some boys, namely Fujimura Shougo, her childhood friend, and Kiriya, a new boy at school who she is helping understand people’s feelings.”

even this might not give a clear picture if not seen the anime xD

  5. ecto says:

thank you so much for these translations. the midotaka ones really put a smile on my face:) do you know where we can actually watch/hear the game? i really wanna hear the scene where shuutoku plays with their food, it’s so funny!
