[in the dining hall]

Kise: Um…Kasamatsu-senpai, I think I already know the answer to this question, but is it really necessary for us to eat this much first thing in the morning?

Kasamatsu: Of course it is. You’re going to need the energy for practice.

Kise: Oh, I know that! But still…I just can’t seem to make any headway here.

Kasamatsu: …if you can’t eat the rest of it, want me to lend you a hand?

Kise: Really?!

Kasamatsu: Yeah, even if I have to shovel it into your mouth by force.

Kise: …I think I’ll pass.

Hayakawa: Quit complaining and sta(r)t eating, Kise!

Moriyama: That’s right. It’s not just you; we’re having a hard time of it ourselves, you know?

Kise: You can say all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that I can’t finish it! I’m almost at my limit here!

Kasamatsu: …geez, you can be such a pain sometimes. Watch that guy from Seirin and follow his example!

Kise: “Seirin”…?

– –

Kagami: (munch, munch)…(munch, munch)… Seconds, please!

– –

Kise: Kagamicchi? There’s no way I can eat like he does! You need to pick a better example!

Kasamatsu: Are you admitting defeat? So much for the reputation of the “Generation of Miracles”, I guess.

Kise: Ugh…when you put it that way…

Hayakawa: Do you(r) best, Kise! Imitating othe(r) people is what you(’re) best at!

Kise: This is totally different! My copying abilities are meant for imitating other people’s movements.

Moriyama: Then doesn’t that mean you should be able to copy Kagami’s big appetite? You know, by imitating his posture when he eats or the way he moves his chopsticks or how fast he chews… If those movements are the secret to his huge appetite, then you should be able to copy it.

Kise: I see… You may have a point…

Kasamatsu: Then go give it a shot, Kise! Copy that guy’s huge appetite!

Kise: Alright! I’ll try my best! First, I need to carefully observe his movements…

– –

Kagami: …hm? It kinda feels like I’m being watched.

Kise: …

Kagami: Hey, why’re you glaring at me like that in the middle of breakfast?

Kise: Oh, don’t mind me. Please keep eating.

Kagami: I was gonna keep going anyway, but… (munch, munch)…

Kise: …now I get it. I have a fairly good grasp of his movements. This is how you do it, right? (munch, munch, munch)

Kagami: Don’t eat while you’re glaring at me like that!

Kise: (chew, chew)… Just ignore me.

Kagami: How am I supposed to do that? It’s really hard to eat like this! Look somewhere else! (munch, munch)

Kise: No can do. (munch, munch)

Kagami: Ugh, fine! Have it your way! (munch, munch, munch, munch)

Kise: Uwooo! I’m not gonna lose! (munch, munch, munch, munch)

– –

Kise: Guh…urgh…it’s so…painful…

Kasamatsu: So you just have to put your mind to it, huh, Kise! You really cleaned your plate.

Kise: No…to be honest, all I did was force myself to keep eating.

Kasamatsu: Huh? Really?

Kise: Even if I copy his movements while I eat, that doesn’t make it any easier~! There’s no secret to it or whatever. His stomach just isn’t normal~!

Kobori: Well, that’s true, but… I don’t think you’re much better, considering that you fell for Moriyama’s explanation earlier…

Kise: Uhhh…it hurts…

[dinnertime in the dining hall]

Takao: Ahh, crap. I screwed up pacing myself with my side dishes, and now I’ve only got rice left. Hey, Shin-chan. Share some of your side dishes with me.

Midorima: I refuse. Besides, it’s your own fault for eating so carelessly.

Takao: Okay, maybe it is, but they were just so delicious that before I knew it, I had already wolfed them down…

Midorima: Be quiet and eat your rice. If you savor it, rice can be quite delicious on its own.

Takao: Looks like you’re not going to hand them over, no matter what I say… Alright, then—! I ain’t gonna let you put that meatball in your mouth!

[clack of chopsticks colliding]

Midorima: W-what are you doing, Takao?! You took the meatball I was about to eat and—!

Takao: It was a shot block! A shot block, you know? You almost dodged it, too.

Miyaji: I get it. That means Midorima’s mouth is the basket, right?

Takao: Got it in one! Heheh, Shin-chan, you’re slacking off. You’ve gotta be more aware of the ball, you know?

Midorima: Wha…? What a ridiculous…

Kimura: You hear that, Midorima? You can’t lose focus until you’ve made your shot. —whoa! A piece of taro just slipped out of my chopsticks!!

Miyaji: Not on my watch! …(gulp, munch, munch)… Yikes, that almost hit the table.

Takao: Miyaji-san, nice rebound! That was a perfect catch.

Miyaji: Nah, since I caught it in midair, I think it was more of a tip-in.

Kimura: Hey, don’t eat it if it’s not yours… Well, not that I really want it back now.

Miyaji: My bad, my bad! I’ll trade ya some of my shiitake. Here, pass!

Ootsubo: …hey, you lot! Stop playing with your food. It’s rude to the people who made it.

Midorima: That’s exactly right. You should sit and eat quietly…ack!!

[the sound of konnyaku sailing through the air]

Kagami: Huh? A piece of konnyaku just came flying onto my plate…

Takao: Whoa, that’s Shin-chan for ya! Nice three-pointer!

Miyaji: Wow, so his super-long-range three-pointers work with food, too.

Kimura: It was a pretty nice shot.

Midorima: Err…t-this isn’t what it looks like! My chopsticks slipped a little, and…

Kagami: What, you’re the one who threw it?

Midorima: No, listen, that’s not…

Kagami: You don’t like konnyaku? I mean, I’ll eat it if you’re giving it to me. But I don’t care much for the fact that you threw it over here. It makes it seem like you’re playing with your food. That’s bad manners, you know.

Midorima: (Urgh…I can’t believe I’m getting a lecture about manners from Kagami, of all people!)

Ootsubo: I just finished telling you not to play with your food, Midorima!

Midorima: No! It was purely an accident!

Takao: Geez, Shin-chan, playing with your food? Man, that just ain’t right.

Midorima: Takao…… You were the one who started all of this.

Takao: Eh? Wait a sec. Uh… Shin-chan? M-my bad!

[Takao gets up from his chair and starts running]

Midorima: Wait! You’re not getting away!

[Midorima gets up and chases after him]

Takao: T-that’s charging—! Foul! Foul…! Gyaaaaa—!!

[clattering sounds ensue as Takao presumably gets tackled]

Ootsubo: I can’t believe they’re making such a scene in the middle of dinner. I’m going to have to give those two a lecture later…

[at breakfast in the dining hall]

Momoi: Oh, Tetsu-kun! ‘Morning~!

Kuroko: Good morning, Momoi-san.

Momoi: I guess we just missed each other last night.

Kuroko: Did something happen last night?

Kagami: After we got out of the bath, you headed back to the room and went right to asleep, didn’t you? After that, Momoi stopped by to give us some popsicles.

Kuroko: Oh, really…?

Momoi: I set yours aside, Tetsu-kun. I’ll go get it for you. Wait just a sec! [runs off]

Kagami: She went out of her way to buy popsicles for us. They were really delicious!

Kuroko: I’m looking forward to trying it.

Kagami: You eat stuff like popsicles and milkshakes a lot, huh?

Kuroko: It’s no different from the way you always eat hamburgers.

Kagami: What, so they’re your favorite foods…? You need to eat something a bit more substantial.

Kuroko: I already do.

Kagami: But you don’t eat nearly enough! You’re gonna collapse in the middle of practice if you keep that up.

Kuroko: I’ll do the best I can.

[Momoi returns]

Momoi: Thanks for waiting! Here, a popsicle for Tetsu-kun! Try it! Try it! It’s really yummy.

Kuroko: Thank you very much, Momoi-san.

Kagami: Oh, a chocolate popsicle? That looks good. Say, Momoi, where’s mine?

Momoi: You already ate five of them last night, Kagami-kun! People got really angry at you because you ate their popsicles!

Kagami: Erk…

Momoi: How is it, Tetsu-kun? It’s a new product. The flavor’s really rich, isn’t it?

Kuroko: You’re right…(lick, lick)… It’s delicious…

Kagami: …

– –

Kuroko: Thank you again for the popsicle. …Kagami-kun, do you want this?

Kagami: The popsicle stick? That’s just trash— Whoa! It says “winner” on it!! (1)

Momoi: Eh?!

Kagami: I’ll go exchange it when we’re on our way back from practice! Momoi, where’d you buy the popsicles?

Momoi: Eh…um, in the shopping district nearby…

Kagami: The shopping district…? Guess I might have to ask somebody else to get it for me. Thanks, Kuroko!

Momoi: Wh…why…did you give the winning stick to Kagami-kun…?

Kuroko: Because “I wanna eat a popsicle!” was practically written on his face.

Kagami: I was making a face like that? Well, it’s true that I wanted some.

Kuroko: You looked like you might steal my popsicle from me.

Kagami: I wouldn’t do that!

Kuroko: Judging by the face you were making, I wouldn’t put it past you.

Kagami: You’re having a field day with this, aren’t you…?

Momoi: Is…is that right? If Kagami-kun wanted it that badly, I guess it can’t be helped…

Kuroko: … Tonight, I’ll return the favor and buy a popsicle for you, Momoi-san.

Momoi: Eh?!

Kuroko: I’ll treat you to a popsicle. …do you not want me to?

Momoi: N-no, I do! I want it! You’re going to buy it for me?!

Kuroko: Yes, as a thank-you for the one you gave me.

Momoi: T-thank you, Tetsu-kun! I’m looking forward to tonight!

– –

Koganei: Momoi-chan was skipping as she left… I wonder what happened.

Izuki: First, Kuroko gave Kagami the winning popsicle stick… And then he promised to treat Momoi to a popsicle.

Koganei: That’s too complicated. Why didn’t he just give the winning stick to Momoi-chan in the first place?

– –

Kagami: Are you sure it’s alright for me to have this? If you were gonna buy some for her anyway, shouldn’t you have just given her the free one?

Kuroko: I won that from the popsicle Momoi-san gave me. If I had given it to her, it would have seemed like I was simply returning what she gave me.

Kagami: Really? I don’t think it really matters, so long as she gets to eat a popsicle.

Kuroko: It’s just the way I feel. It didn’t seem like the right thing to do, so…

Kagami: Hmm…? How should I put this…? You’re a really considerate guy, huh?

– –

Koganei: Ohh, I get it! I get it now! That’s what they call “playing hard to get”! He made Momoi-chan feel disappointed, then immediately cheered her up!

Izuki: I didn’t know he could use such high-level techniques with such finesse… His romance skills are impressive…!

Koganei: I might have to ask Kuroko…no, “Kuroko-sensei” for some advice in that area.

– –

Translation Notes:

(1) A stick that has the word “atari” (“winner” or “prize”) written on it can be exchanged for a free popsicle, as in chapter 38/episode 14, when Kuroko gave Momoi the stick from his popsicle.

Hayakawa: Uwooooo! Mo(r)iyama-san! What was that move you did just now?!

Moriyama: You couldn’t stop me, right?

Hayakawa: I was completely fooled by you(r) movements, Mo(r)iyama-san!

Kasamatsu: Moriyama, was that a new move? It looked really tricky.

Moriyama: I tried inventing my own way of breaking past the opponent’s defense.

Kasamatsu: Looks like you used it pretty effectively. I think it’s got some potential for use in a real game.

Kobori: That’s the one you’ve been practicing like crazy lately, right?

Moriyama: Yeah. It took me about a week to perfect it, but…

Kobori: Hm? You just learned a new move, but you don’t seem that happy about it.

Moriyama: I mean, I am happy about it, but it’s a little complicated…

Kobori: Why’s that?

Moriyama: Well, take a look at Kise…

– –

Kise: Moriyama-senpai! That was a great move just now! [executes the new move] This seems like it’ll come in really handy! I think I’ll start using it, too!

– –

Moriyama: See? That move took me a whole week to perfect, but he was able to mimic it at the drop of a hat.

Kobori: I get it. Yeah, I can see how that’s a little complicated.

Moriyama: Now I think I understand how our opponents feel when Kise copies their techniques during a game…

Kasamatsu: That’s just it. His copying abilities put a lot of psychological pressure on the other team. Besides, it’s reassuring that we have two guys on one team who can use such a promising move. In fact, the more moves he copies, the better chance we have of completely overwhelming our opponents.

Kobori: Then wouldn’t it be simpler to have him imitate pro athletes?

Kasamatsu: I don’t think he can. I’m sure he’d already be doing it if he could. Hey, Kise!

Kise: [rushes up] What is it?

Kasamatsu: Can you imitate pro athletes’ moves?

Kise: Unfortunately, there are limits on what I can copy.

Kasamatsu: Yeah, I figured as much.

Kise: To put it simply, I can’t copy anyone whose body is built differently than mine.

Kasamatsu: Like people whose height or muscle tone is different from yours?

Kise: That’s right. For example, it’s impossible for me to imitate someone who can run 100 meters in nine seconds. So I can’t copy pro athletes, since their bodies are built so differently.

Moriyama: But on the other hand, you can easily imitate other high schoolers, whose bodies are more similar to yours.

Kise: There are plenty of high school basketball players I can’t copy.

Moriyama: Like the guys from the “Generation of Miracles”?

Kise: Right. I mean, I was never able to completely copy Aominecchi… Same goes for Midorimacchi. I don’t think I can do it.

Kasamatsu: You were pretty close to copying Aomine. And even with Midorima, don’t you think you could do it if you tried?

Kise: …well, it might not be totally impossible.

Kasamatsu: You’re not gonna get anywhere if you give up without even trying. You need to put in some effort first before you decide on the outcome.

Kise: …you’re exactly right. But there is one person I know I’d never be able to copy, even if I tried.

Kasamatsu: Who?

Kise: Kurokocchi, of course. No matter what I do, I’d never be able to imitate his lack of presence. I mean, I even work as a model. We’re like polar opposites.

Kasamatsu: That makes sense… Yeah, I don’t think you’d be able to imitate him.

Kise: But if I could copy Kurokocchi, that would be a pretty powerful technique. There’s no sense in trying to do the impossible, though, so I’ll do my best within the scope of what is possible.

      Thanks for your comment.
I would love to make a patch, but I think the process of patching the game would be fairly time consuming and require knowledge of video game coding. Also, I’ve been playing a hard copy of the game, so I don’t even have an ISO.
That said, if there are other people willing to form a group to work on a patch, I’d be more than willing to provide translations. 🙂

“Don’t look at me. Your guy was the one who barged in and messed things up.” … and did you notice that Midorima didn’t even ONCE said something about that “YOUR guy” part? And that they were quarreling like old married couple? xD
Sorry if my spaming about their 99% of canon relationship is annoying you xD

    • grimmfeather says:

The original Japanese for the “your guy” line was 「オマエんとこの」and 「オメーのところのヤツ」, which literally mean “the guy from ‘your’ place (Shuutoku)”, i.e., “your teammate”. That said, Kagami seems to be referring specifically to the association between Midorima and Takao, as if Midorima should somehow take responsibility for what happened, which is why I chose to translate it the way I did. XD

They certainly have the old married couple act down pat. There are a couple of Shuutoku events coming up in the game that I think you’ll enjoy. 😉

Thanks for your comment, as always! Reading people’s comments is part of the fun for me.

Ufff, then I’m happy that I didn’t bother you with my chatting xD
I wish I knew Japaneese so I could at least read all those Midorima and Takao moments (care to translate them? *shining eyes like Cat from Shrek* LOL) but I don’t know it and I’m too old to start learning xD
Well, if he said it that way then it still seems to be “YOUR guy” without any pun to the team LOL
And it’s really good that there is someone like you who translates just for fun and shares it with us. Really, thank you >.<

Haha, I don’t think it’s ever too late to start learning another language, but I’ll definitely keep translating! It’s great Japanese practice for me, and I want everyone to be able to enjoy the game.

I for one, have started to just for fun imagine girls from other animes who’d be suitable to the characters in knb…..when i thought of Kuroko , honoka from Pretty cure came up in my mind….the same happened when I thought of akashi…..creepy xD

  4. Guest says:

just for the sake of this being more understandable, honokas description :
“Honoka is a gentle, understanding girl who always put others before herself. She is very smart, even being called the “The Queen of Knowledge (知識の女王 Chishiki no joō?)”, “The Queen of Intelligence (知性の女王 Chisei no joō?)” or “The Queen of Wisdom (叡智の女王 Eichi no joō?)” by her classmates, and often uses this to help people. However, Honoka may also be quite strict, and when she thinks someone has not done all of their work, she’ll force them to do it. She is, however, doing this because she cares. Although she is the crush of almost every boy in school, she is not interested in most of them, but she has shown to care very much for some boys, namely Fujimura Shougo, her childhood friend, and Kiriya, a new boy at school who she is helping understand people’s feelings.”

even this might not give a clear picture if not seen the anime xD
